What did Sergeant Stubby do?
Sergeant Stubby was a dog who helped soldiers fighting in World War One.
Stubby went on to become a very brave soldier who won lots of medals before reaching the age of two.

How did Stubby join the army?
In 1917, a small dog was found wandering around an army training camp in Connecticut, USA.
One of the soldiers, Corporal Robert Conroy, became friends with the dog. He named him Stubby because he had a short tail.
When Corporal Conroy had to travel to France to fight in the war, he didn’t want to leave Stubby behind.
So, he secretly took Stubby with him on the ship to France. 🐾🚢

What did Stubby do during the war?

Sergeant Stubby was a brave dog who took part in many battles, including the Battle of the Marne and the Battle of Château-Thierry.
Stubby helped the soldiers in lots of ways:
- He had excellent hearing and could warn soldiers when enemy troops were getting close.
- He worked as a mercy dog, helping to find injured soldiers and staying with them until help arrived.
- Dogs have a much stronger sense of smell than humans, so Stubby could detect dangerous gas attacks before the soldiers noticed them.
- Stubby was very brave, but he was also injured while helping others. He was caught in a gas attack and was once hit by pieces of metal called shrapnel, which fly through the air after an explosion.
Because of his courage and loyalty, Sergeant Stubby became one of the most famous dogs of World War One. 🐾🎖️

What happened to Stubby?
Sergeant Stubby died in 1926 when he was about 10 years old.
He became so famous that the New York Times newspaper wrote a special article about him after he died.
The article said that Stubby was very brave and stayed calm, even when the soldiers around him were frightened.
It also said that one of Stubby’s greatest gifts was bringing happiness and comfort to people. He helped many soldiers feel better during a very difficult time.
This model is displayed at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
