Eco Schools Wales Green Flag Award
Abercarn Primary has achieved platinum thanks to the hard work of the eco committee and everyone around the school! Schools can apply for platinum status once they have been awarded the Green Flag four times. Platinum status shows that we are demonstrating a long-term commitment to environmental education.
What is the Eco Schools Green Flag all about?
Eco Schools is a 7 step framework, that leads to Green Flag accreditation. The green flag is a symbol of a schools commitment to environmental education.
The 7 Steps:
- Form an eco committee
- Undertake an environmental review
- Create an action plan
- Identify curriculum links
- Inform and Involve everyone
- Monitor and evaluate the action plan
- Follow the eco code
The 10 Eco Schools areas are:
- Biodiversity
- Energy
- Global Citizenship
- Healthy Living
- Litter
- Marine
- School Grounds
- Transport
- Waste and Recycling
- Water


Healthy Schools Scheme
Abercarn Primary is an a credited member of the Healthy School Scheme.
What is the Healthy Schools Scheme?
The Welsh Network of Healthy Schools Scheme (WNHSS) was launched in 1999. They define a healthy school as; 'one which actively promotes, protects and embeds the physical, mental and social health and well being of its community through positive action.'
This is achieved through policy, strategic planning, staff development, curriculum, ethos, physical environment and community relations.
There are 7 topic areas that schools need to address throughout the year, to retain their healthy school status:
- Food and fitness
- Mental and emotional health and well being
- Personal development and relationships
- Substance use and misuse
- Safety
- Hygiene
