What is the world wide web?
Lots of people think the internet and the World Wide Web are the same thing — but they’re not!
The internet is like a huge network that connects computers all around the world.
The World Wide Web (or just “the web”) is all the websites and pages you can visit using that network.
So, your web browser uses the internet to show you the web.
That means when you say, “Can I go on the internet?” what you really mean is, “Can I go on the web and look at some websites?”

How did the web begin?
In 1989, a man called Tim Berners-Lee created something called the World Wide Web (or “the web”).
He wanted to help scientists share their work and ideas more easily with each other.
The web made it possible for computers all over the world to connect through the internet and share information.
Because of how important his invention was, Tim Berners-Lee was given a special award in 2004 and became Sir Tim Berners-Lee.

How is information on the web viewed?
When you go on the internet to look at a webpage, you use a program called a web browser.
A web browser asks for the webpage you want to see, and then shows it to you on your screen.
The first web browser was made by a man called Tim Berners-Lee. Today, there are lots of different web browsers people can use.
Can you find out which web browser you are using right now?

How has the world wide web changed?
The internet has changed a lot since it was first made.
At the beginning, websites were very simple. They mostly had words and pictures, a bit like reading a book or a magazine on a screen.
Now, websites are much more exciting! They can have videos, games, animations, music, and quizzes.
People can also share things online, like photos, videos, and messages, without needing to build their own website.
This newer version of the internet is called Web 2.0. It makes it easy for everyone to join in and share things with people all around the world.
How will it continue to change?
When people first used the internet, they could only look at information on big computers.
Now, you can use lots of different devices to go online, like tablets, phones, TVs, games consoles, and even smartwatches.
These devices can also let you know when something new is shared with you, like a message or an update!
