Urgent Update – School Closure Due to Extreme Heat
Updated Issued Tuesday 23rd June 2026 1:50pmFollowing careful monitoring of conditions in school today, we have found that classroom temperatures have exceeded 34°C, remaining high even without pupils present. With higher temperatures forecast, alongside a full school of pupils and canteen use, conditions are expected to become increasingly uncomfortable and potentially unsafe across the school.
After discussion with the Chair of Governors, and with the wellbeing of pupils and staff as our priority, we have made the decision to:
- Close the school on Wednesday and Thursday to all pupils.
- Reopen on Friday as temperatures return to lower levels.
I really do apologise for the disruption caused. Please be assured that I/we have done everything possible to remain open safely. We are also working closely with our cluster schools, and many local primary and secondary schools are taking similar action
Further information:
- Year 6 transition planned for Thursday will be rescheduled.
- Any meetings with parents will be moved to Teams where possible. We will contact you shortly.
- Staff will continue with ALN reviews and may contact you by telephone as originally planned.
- Inline with our home learning policy we will not move to remote learning until the 3rd day of closure. Also many Chromebooks have been left in school and given the heat this seems totally unbeneficial. We will be back in school on Friday.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support during this period of extreme heat and we will see you all Friday. Please stay as cool as possible.
Extreme Heat
Updated Issued Monday 22nd June 2026"A Red Weather Warning for extreme heat has now been issued for Wednesday and Thursday. We understand this may be concerning for many parents, and we want to reassure you that we are taking appropriate steps to safeguard all pupils.
As previously communicated, we will be implementing additional measures in school, including:
- Relaxing school uniform – children may wear cool, appropriate clothing – no flip flops.
- Ensuring pupils are well hydrated throughout the day.
- Limiting outdoor time, using shaded areas and only where appropriate.
- Adapting activities to minimise exposure to heat.
At present, there has been no blanket directive from Caerphilly Local Authority regarding school closures or early finishes etc. We are continuing to liaise closely with our cluster schools and will keep the situation under constant review.
There COULD be the decision to close early, there COULD be the decision to collect your child early if you want or are able to or there may be no change or a combination of various things. I will keep the situation under review and update you as soon as I know more. The most logical and sensible option at the moment may be for parents to have the option to collect children after their lunch if you want to, however there is no clear guidance or decision yet. I will update you if there is a blanked decision etc.
We do anticipate that temperatures within the school building may become extremely high, and we will continue to always prioritise pupil safety and wellbeing. Over the weekend, I managed to purchase lots of fans to help with the heat in school.
Please continue to support us by:

Sending your child with plenty of water

Applying sunscreen before school

Providing a hat

Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear.
We will keep you fully updated should any further changes be necessary.
Thank you for your continued understanding and support.
