CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)

This continues to be a developing situation and we will update parents with additional advice as and when required. The most recent advice and links to Government guidance is available on our school website.

The most up to date advice is:

Regardless of any previous travel, anyone with a new persistent cough or high temperature (above 37.8oC) should:-

·       Stay indoors and avoid contact with other people (self- isolate) for 7 days.

·       Not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital, but check their symptoms against the call NHS Direct Wales website https://www.nhsdirect.wales.nhs.uk/SelfAssessments/symptomcheckers/?ScName=CoronaVirusCOVID19&SCTId=175

·        Only call NHS Direct on 0845 4647 (or 111 if available in their local area) or your GP for medical advice if advised to do so using the symptom checker, and follow any medical advice.

Schools are not currently closing. However, contingency plans are in place at Abercarn Primary if this situation changes. A plan was sent home last week. IF YOU HAVE NOT JOINED SEESAW – DO IT NOW!

An updated contingency plan will be sent home and available tomorrow – this will provide further guidance to parents and pupils if we were to close in the future.

Enhanced measures in school:

We are enhancing the measures at school. From this point onwards:

·       NO PARENT will be allowed past the second door in Reception. If you need to speak to a member of staff a message will be taken and he/she will contact you via telephone / email.

·       External visitors to the school will be limited. This will include Football Club and Year 4 Rugby. Music tuition will currently continue as stringent measures are in place with the music service. There will be no Choir or French club until further notice. Non-essential meetings will be postponed and school to school visits will be rearranged.

·       Whole school assemblies will now take place in class. We will be reducing the number of opportunities for children / staff to be together in large numbers.

Absence scenarios:

With any absence – please let us know! We will be supportive and understanding regarding the current situation. Further guidance has been sought today regarding situations that have arisen and questions posed over the weekend:

·       If you decide to take your child out of school (Parental choice to home-school) and your child has no symptoms and no vulnerabilities

o   Unauthorised absence.

o   No work set from school until the school closes (if we close).

o   We will be supportive of this unauthorized absence.

·       If your child has a general cold or illness with no coronavirus symptoms:

o   Authorised illness absence.

o   No work set from school until the school closes (if we close).

o   Return to school when feeling better.

·       If your child has coronavirus symptoms - a new persistent cough or high temperature

o   Counted as an “other authorised” absence.

o   Self-isolate for 7 days and follow NHS guidance.

o   No work set from school until the school closes (if we close).

o   Return to school when feeling better after self-isolation and if no further symptoms.

·       If you or your child has symptoms and are self-isolating:

o   Counted as an “other authorised” absence.

o   Self-isolate for 7 days and follow NHS guidance.

o   No work set from school until the school closes (if we close).

o   Return to school when feeling better after self-isolation and if no further symptoms.

·       If you decide to take your child out of school (Parent choice to home-school) because your child is vulnerable or family members are vulnerable:

o   Dealt with on a case by case basis – possible “other authorised” absence.

o   No work set from school until the school closes (if we close).

·       If a parent or close family member / close contact displays symptoms, is a confirmed case and / or is following NHS advice to self-isolate:

o   There is no official guidance regarding your child not attending school. However, I would encourage parents to be honest, sensible, adhere to self-isolation and take the appropriate action to look after his/herself, their family and be considerate to others.

o   Counted as an “other authorised” absence if child is not in school.

o   No work set from school until the school closes (if we close).

o   Return to school when feeling better after self-isolation and if no further symptoms.

Although work is not set from school, children have access to Abacus, Purple Mash and Reading activities. A list of online resources will also be provided shortly.
