Weekly Newsletter 4th September 2019
by Abercarn Admin - Wednesday, 4 September 2019, 1:49 PM

I hope everyone had a lovely Summer break and you’re all refreshed for the new school year!  A big welcome to our new Nursery and to all the new pupils and their families joining us throughout the school.

Welcome to Mr Elliot Yamamoto – our new Teacher in Key Stage 2 – I am sure you will see him around and get to know him over the coming months.

Mrs Aimee Harry is now the ALNCo and has responsibility for Additional Learning Needs throughout the school. She will be holding monthly ALN drop in surgeries and co-ordinating Additional Learning Needs, More able and talented, IDPs, Support Services, Educational Psychology, Behaviour Support and Family Intervention and Support.

As usual, this is a busy term and many things will be happening. I look forward to your continued support! New parent curriculum overviews will be sent home within the next few weeks and dates for your diary for the Autumn Term are included below and will be on our website too! The parent overview will allow you to reinforce and explore concepts at home.

During the summer holidays lots has been happening to improve our school further. The pathways, road and car park were resurfaced, there is a new fenced area outside Year 1, new cabling for our ICT infrastructure has been installed and there are several new doors.

Our weekly newsletter will be added to our School App as well as being available on all our social media platforms (e.g. Website, Facebook, Twitter etc. with only minimal copies available to collect from a “newsletter box” at the front of the school on a weekly basis.

PLEASE DOWNLOAD AND SIGN UP FOR THE SCHOOL APP via your APP Store. Download “MySchoolApp” and search for Abercarn Primary. Don’t forget to adjust settings within the APP to receive relevant notifications. Further information is within the “Important Letters” Pack.

As you are aware, the Curriculum in Wales will be changing in 2022. Draft curriculum documents are now with schools and we are well on the way with preparing for the new curriculum. We are already beginning to implement changes from this term in order to be well prepared for this considerable change. There will be termly meetings for parents to find out about the Curriculum, become familiar with our approach and to share your opinions, thoughts and provide an input. Pupils were already consulted in Summer Term 2019.

The first of these meetings will take place on WEDNESDAY 18th SEPTEMBER 2019 – 4.30pm in the School Hall. Please attend to find out what is changing here at Abercarn Primary and also the changes to the entire curriculum. It will affect all pupils and it is important you know these changes and are able to give feedback. Please let the office staff know you will be attending.

The school office opens at 8.30am daily and closes at 3.30pm. There is a drop box outside the main door and outside the office for anything to be dropped off securely.

Please remember dinners can only be paid for using the online system / UPay app. We are a cashless dinner payment school.  It is important you regularly top up online accounts with sufficient credit.

We will be continuing our drive with E-Safety this year and you will receive termly updates from our E-Safety group. The group is made up of pupils, a Governor and two staff.

The weekly dinner menu is available both online and on a notice board towards the front of the school. Dinner menus and nutritional facts are also available on the “my school lunch” website. The newsletter and announcements will also be in the red notice board.  We will also continue to use the text service / School App for announcements / updates – please make sure all your details are up to date!

Details of school clubs and sports will be sent home in the next couple of weeks

They must be returned to school as soon as possible. We will be chasing any letters not returned.

Lots of letters are included in your pack owing to General Data Protection Regulations 2018 (GDPR). Please note staff may not discuss pupil details over the telephone without first checking whether they are talking to someone with parental responsibility. Please do not be offended by this – they need to check!

It is important that pupils wear school uniform! Our school uniform is available at Regis, Newbridge and Darren Morgan Sports in Crosskeys!  Uniform promotes positive behaviour, our school community and reduces peer pressure. All Foundation Phase children must have “Wet Weather” gear in school Please ensure it is clearly marked! Please ensure children have appropriate PE clothes – plain t-shirt and plain shorts.

Dark coloured trainers are acceptable but brightly coloured laces must be avoided.

A portion of fruit is 30p. Please ensure packed lunches are healthy.

It is important for children to attend school regularly. We will be chasing parents if pupils have attendance of below 95% and will be contacting the Education Welfare Officer if pupils are not punctual and attendance drops below 90%. Our attendance target for this year is 95% - Attendance forms part of the categorisation criteria of schools – Please help us to achieve well!

This week is Menu 1
